Organized chronologically through a research experience, the literature review addresses (in)equitable access to undergraduate research, elements of the research experience—contribution to knowledge, circulation, mentoring and partnership, and personal and intellectual growth—and long-term effects of undergraduate research, including retention, graduation, and career preparation. Highlighting the importance of qualitative, quantitative, and longitudinal research, we conclude by describing our research methods and participants: undergraduate research alumni from multiple institutions and from across the disciplines were interviewed about their research experiences and the influence of those experiences today. Discussion Questions What questions do you have about undergraduate research that are not well addressed in the scholarship? How well do the themes in the scholarship match with your own experience of undergraduate research, as a researcher, mentor, and/or administrator? Participants in this study responded to five claims about undergraduate research. What claim would you add to this list if you were conducting a study of current or former undergraduate researchers?
