The Center for Engaged Learning (CEL) offers programs that bring Elon University students and faculty together to study, practice, and advance engaged learning in higher education. Through research, publishing, professional development, and student-faculty collaboration, CEL programs connect members of the Elon community with broader conversations about teaching and learning.

Programs for Faculty

CEL offers faculty programs that support focused research, scholarly development, and leadership in engaged learning.

CEL Scholars

The CEL Scholar program supports Elon faculty members as they develop expertise in a focused area of engaged learning. During a two-year appointment, CEL Scholars conduct scholarly work, develop resources for the field, and contribute to CEL’s research and publications.

CEL Senior Scholars

The CEL Senior Scholar program supports continued scholarly inquiry related to engaged learning and CEL Research Seminar topics. Senior Scholars extend research, complete publishing projects, and contribute to national and international conversations about engaged learning.

Programs for Students

CEL’s student programs provide opportunities for undergraduate research, publishing experience, and collaboration with faculty and scholars studying engaged learning.

CEL Student Scholars

The CEL Student Scholar program is a three-year, mentored undergraduate research experience. Student Scholars collaborate with Elon faculty and staff and researchers from colleges and universities around the world to study specific topics in engaged learning. Student Scholars receive financial support for their participation and have opportunities to contribute to research seminars, present their work, publish their research, and join an international community of scholars interested in engaged learning.

Publishing Internship

The CEL Publishing Internship gives Elon University students hands-on experience with the editorial, production, design, and promotion of scholarly publications about engaged learning and teaching. The publishing intern works with CEL staff on projects related to books, digital resources, and other publishing initiatives.

Past Programs

CEL has periodically convened Student Seminars focused on current scholarship and questions related to undergraduate education and engaged learning. These seminars created space for students to bring their experiences and perspectives into conversation with research on teaching and learning.
