Publishing interns gain hands-on experience supporting the development and promotion of books and other resources about engaged learning and teaching. Meet our current publishing intern and other members of the CEL team. About the Publishing Internship Each semester, CEL invites Elon University students to apply for a paid Publishing Internship. Interns work alongside CEL staff on real publishing projects, gaining experience with the editorial, production, design, and promotional work involved in bringing scholarly resources to readers. CEL publishes Open Access Books on engaged learning and teaching and collaborates with Routledge on print books for the Series on Engaged Learning and Teaching. Both series are supported by supplemental resources published on the CEL website. The internship provides students with an opportunity to contribute to these publications while developing professional skills and exploring potential careers in publishing and communications. The Publishing Internship is designed for Elon University students interested in publishing, editing, communications, design, social media, or related fields. Candidates should be pursuing a degree or minor in a related field, such as Professional Writing or Communications, etc. Internship Responsibilities Publishing interns work 3–6 hours per week, or 40–80 hours per semester, depending on their professional development goals and credit-hour requirements. Projects vary each semester and are matched to each intern’s experience and professional goals. Sample projects include: Copyediting and proofreading Indexing and other book-production tasks Designing promotional materials for books and publishing projects Analyzing social media and promotional efforts to inform future promotion strategies Supporting book and resource promotion across CEL’s digital channels Contributing to other projects within CEL’s editorial and production schedules Interns may work on projects related to individual books, CEL’s publishing series, or other Center publishing initiatives. Through their work with CEL, interns gain experience with real publications and professional production schedules while learning how scholarly content moves from development and editing through production and promotion. How to Apply Current Publishing Internship openings are posted through the Elon Job Network (EJN). Applicants should submit a resume and cover letter through EJN explaining their interest in the internship and relevant qualifications.
