Creative Ways of Caring: Developing a Community of Care through Mural Makingwith Evelyn Davis-Walker and Katelynn Rogers (Valdosta State University)Murals have been a form of art making for centuries. They provide a common language and universal skillset for citizens and strangers to come together for a common purpose. Through cooperative learning strategies such as positive interdependence, participants will work together to create a mural on a moveable wall. In this highly interactive workshop, participants will also gain firsthand knowledge of effective emotive relationships as part of actively engaged learning environments. No artistic skills necessary. Every Brain Belongs: Partnering with Neurodivergent Students to Co-Create Inclusive Learning Environmentswith Shannon Dowling (Ayers Saint Gross) and Kira Campagna, Caroline J. Ketcham, Ben Krasnow, Kaz Kelly, and Jessie L. Moore (Elon University)Neurodivergent learners often encounter invisible sensory and social barriers in informal campus learning spaces such as libraries and study areas. This interactive pre-conference workshop draws on an in-progress student-partnered research project at Elon University, in which students, faculty, and design researchers co-designed a neuroinclusive study and lounge space within the campus library. Participants will experience participatory methods that center students as co-researchers, translating lived experience into design principles that foster comfort, focus, and belonging beyond the classroom.
