Chapter 1 introduces the six themes that emerge when looking at the values and commitments of many of the most successful institutions of higher education: learning, relationships, expectations, alignment, improvement, and leadership. The authors believe that these six themes provide a heuristic for focusing individual and institutional attention on what matters most in undergraduate education.
