We encourage you to use the FIRE Toolkit questions to guide your reflection on and discussion with others about which Elon Experiences are the best match for you. You also can use them to talk with peers about their plans for their future ELRs and their experiences with ELRs they’ve already completed.

As part of the Elon Core Curriculum, students must complete 2 units of Elon Experiences to satisfy the Experiential Learning Requirement. Some students participate in more than two, but it’s not a competition. Pick the Elon Experiences that best align with your personal, educational, and professional goals; your core values; and your interests.

Using the FIRE Toolkit questions in conversation with peers, family, faculty, staff, and other important people in your life might help you re-imagine which Elon Experiences align with your goals. Research suggests that participating in educational activities like the Elon Experiences makes college feel more “worth it,” considering both the costs and the benefits. That’s because these activities often embed key engaged learning practices like facilitating meaningful relationships, building on your prior knowledge and experiences, and helping you see connections between your learning and broader contexts. Elon grads Sophia Abbot (MHE ’20) and Lucia-Maribel Craige (’20) have shared additional strategies for seeking out these high-impact educational practices.
