Vice provost, dean, workshop facilitator, teacher… Duane Roen has occupied multiple leadership roles over his career, and mentored many leaders. In this chapter, Roen draws on his experiences, not just as a leader, but as a parent, a two-time cancer survivor, a farm kid and 4-H member, a mensch, and so much more to offer sixteen invaluable leadership lessons, each grounded in the rich variety of his past and current experiences.

Discussion Questions

Which of Roen’s lessons resonate with you more, and which less? Why do you find benefit in the lessons you do? To what extent, is your response to Roen’s lessons connected to your own ideas about leadership, and how is it connected? Based on your own experience, what other lessons would you add to Roen’s list, and what would you say about them? Which of Roen’s lessons are you most likely to share with friends, family, and co-workers, and why? In light of Roen’s list, what do you consider to be your greatest leadership qualities, and why?  Who are your role models for leadership, and why? Where are you in your journey to becoming the leader you’d strive to be?
